Your Mars sign is the zodiac sign Mars was in when you were born, and astrologers read it as your drive: how you go after what you want, how you handle anger and conflict, how you compete, and the shape of your desire. Your Sun sign describes who you are. Your Mars sign describes what you do when you want something, or when someone gets in your way.
Mars is the planet of action, named for the Roman god of war, and in a chart it's less about battle than about energy and will. Here's how to find yours, what each of the twelve placements is associated with, and how Mars shows up in arguments and in love.
How to find your Mars sign
Mars usually spends about six or seven weeks in each sign. In the years it turns retrograde, which happens roughly every two years, it can stay in one sign for six months or more. So your birth date is often enough to know your Mars sign, but near a sign change you need the exact chart.
A free birth chart lists Mars with its sign, degree and house. The house shows where in life you spend your fight: a tenth-house Mars pours it into career, a fourth-house Mars into home and family. If the chart shows an R beside Mars, it was retrograde at your birth; our guide to retrograde planets in a birth chart explains what astrologers make of that.
Mars in all twelve signs
Mars in Aries
Mars in its own sign: fast, direct, competitive and honest about wanting things. Anger flares and fades quickly. Starts more projects than it finishes, and isn't sorry.
Mars in Taurus
Slow to start and very hard to stop. This Mars works steadily, digs in when pushed, and expresses desire through the senses. The temper is rare and memorable.
Mars in Gemini
Action through words. Quick, restless and argumentative for sport, juggling several goals at once. Fights tend to be verbal and clever, and are often over before the other person has caught up.
Mars in Cancer
Drive powered by feeling and protectiveness. Fights hardest for family and home, and tends to approach conflict sideways, through moods or silences, rather than head-on.
Mars in Leo
Bold, proud and generous. Wants to act on a stage and be admired for the effort. Anger is dramatic and loyal: insult this Mars's friends and you'll hear about it.
Mars in Virgo
Effort as craft. Methodical, precise and tireless with a task, and inclined to express irritation as criticism. Gets the job done properly or not at all.
Mars in Libra
Drive aimed at fairness and partnership. Dislikes open conflict and may avoid it until it can't, then argues like a lawyer. Often acts best on behalf of someone else.
Mars in Scorpio
Intense, strategic and private. Mars's traditional home, so the drive is deep and enduring. Doesn't forget a slight, rarely shows its full hand, and commits completely.
Mars in Sagittarius
Adventurous, blunt and enthusiastic. Fights for principles and freedom, says exactly what it thinks, and loses interest in battles that feel petty.
Mars in Capricorn
Ambitious, disciplined and patient. Traditionally the sign where Mars works best: drive with a plan. Anger is controlled and channeled into getting ahead.
Mars in Aquarius
Drive for ideas and causes. Independent, contrary when told what to do, and more likely to argue about a principle than a feeling. Cool in a crisis.
Mars in Pisces
Action that follows intuition and mood. Gentle, imaginative and indirect, often working for others or for something larger than itself. Anger tends to dissolve, or leak out sideways.
Where Mars is strongest, and where it struggles
Traditional astrology ranks planets by sign, a scheme called dignity. Mars rules Aries and, traditionally, Scorpio (modern astrologers give Scorpio to Pluto). It's exalted, or especially effective, in Capricorn. It's said to be in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the signs opposite its own, and in fall in Cancer, opposite its exaltation.
That doesn't make a Libra or Cancer Mars weak or bad. It means the drive works in a less straightforward way. A Mars in Libra still fights, but for balance and on someone else's behalf. A Mars in Cancer still acts, but out of feeling rather than impulse. Many people with these placements are formidable once they understand their own style. Our guide to ruling planets of the zodiac signs lays out the full dignity table.
How your Mars sign argues
Mars is the first place astrologers look when they want to understand someone's conflict style. Roughly:
- Fire Mars (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) says it now, loudly, and moves on. Needs to be heard quickly, not managed.
- Earth Mars (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) wants a practical fix and dislikes drama. Needs time and a clear plan.
- Air Mars (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) argues with ideas and words. Needs to talk it through, and may intellectualize anger.
- Water Mars (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) feels it before it says it. Needs safety before it can be direct.
Knowing your Mars won't stop a fight, but it can tell you what you need from one. A fire Mars partnered with a water Mars, for example, does better when the fire Mars learns to pause and the water Mars learns to speak sooner. The zodiac elements and modalities guide explains the groupings in more depth.
Mars in love and desire
In relationships, astrologers pair Mars with Venus. Venus describes what you find beautiful and how you like to be loved; Mars describes how you pursue, what excites you, and your physical style. Someone with Venus in Cancer and Mars in Sagittarius may want a secure home life and a partner who still takes them on adventures.
Between two people, the contacts between one person's Mars and the other's Venus are a classic marker of attraction. Our guides to Mars sign compatibility and Venus and Mars aspects in synastry go into the pairings, and your Venus sign completes the picture of your love style.
Questions readers ask
What does Mars represent in astrology?
Drive, action, courage, anger, competition and desire. Astrologers describe it as the planet of how you assert yourself and go after what you want, in work, in conflict and in attraction.
Is the Mars sign important?
Yes. It's one of the personal planets, along with Mercury and Venus, and it describes everyday behavior: how you start things, how you handle frustration, what motivates you. It often explains a side of someone their Sun sign misses.
What is the strongest Mars sign?
Traditionally, Mars is considered most at home in Aries and Scorpio and at its most effective in Capricorn. Strong in that sense means direct and well supported, not better. Every Mars sign has its own kind of force.
What does it mean if my Mars is in the same sign as my Sun?
Your identity and your drive pull in the same direction, so you tend to act very much in character. A Leo with Mars in Leo, for instance, usually reads as unmistakably Leo.
