What Mercury retrograde means
The astronomy. Mercury never actually reverses. Because it orbits the Sun much faster than Earth, there are stretches when Earth and Mercury line up so that, from here, Mercury appears to drift backward against the stars. It slows, stops (the station), moves back about 10 to 15 degrees over roughly three weeks, stops again and resumes its usual direction.
The tradition. Mercury is the planet of messages, travel, contracts and quick thinking, so astrologers read its retrograde as a time when those things want more care: plans get revised, old conversations come back, details matter more than speed. It is not a curse, and nothing has to break.
Good uses for a retrograde
- Review, revise and re-read: the draft, the budget, the plan you made in a hurry.
- Reconnect: answer the message you meant to answer, or call someone you lost touch with.
- Leave buffers: an extra half hour for travel, a second look before you hit send.
- Back things up, and finish what you started before beginning something new.

The shadow periods
The two weeks or so before and after each retrograde are called the shadow, because Mercury is crossing the same stretch of the zodiac it will cover, or has just covered, backward. Astrologers treat the pre-shadow as a preview of what will need revisiting and the post-shadow as the time to wrap it up.
