Rising sign questions

What is a rising sign?

Your rising sign, or Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. Astrologers read it as your style of meeting the world: first impressions, instincts in new situations, the way you start things.

Why do I need my birth time?

The rising sign changes about every two hours as the Earth turns, and the degree moves roughly one degree every four minutes. Without a birth time it can’t be known; a birth certificate or a hospital record often has the time.

Why does the birthplace matter?

The horizon depends on where you are. The same moment gives a different rising sign in New York and in London, so we use your birthplace’s latitude, longitude and time zone, including daylight saving time in force on that date.

Is my rising sign the same as my Sun sign?

Only if you were born around sunrise. Your Sun sign comes from your birthday; your rising sign comes from the time and place, so most people have two different signs.
