Your Venus sign describes your style in love: what you find attractive, how you flirt and show affection, and what makes you feel valued. In astrology, Venus is the planet of attraction, pleasure and taste, so its sign is often a sharper guide to your love life than your sun sign. It always sits close to your sun sign, but it frequently falls in a different one.
What Venus does in a birth chart
Astrologers associate Venus with the things we're drawn toward: people, beauty, comfort, art, food, money and anything else we value. It rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, and they show its two sides. The Taurus side is sensual and steady, about pleasures you can touch and keep. The Libra side is social and relational, about harmony, partnership and good manners.
In love specifically, your Venus sign is read as:
- What attracts you, and what sort of person catches your eye across a room.
- How you show affection, from love notes to fixing someone's dripping tap.
- What makes you feel loved, which isn't always the same as how you give it.
- What you value, including what you'll happily spend time and money on.
Venus isn't the whole story. Astrologers read it alongside Mars (desire and pursuit), the Moon (emotional needs) and the seventh house (committed partnership). But if you learn only one placement beyond your Sun, Moon and rising sign, Venus is the usual choice for love. A free birth chart will show you where yours is.
Why your Venus sign sits close to your Sun
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun: at most about 47 degrees. Since each sign is 30 degrees wide, your Venus sign is always either your sun sign or one of the two signs on either side of it. A Gemini, for example, can have Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer or Leo, and nowhere else.
Venus usually spends a few weeks in each sign. When it turns retrograde, which happens for roughly six weeks about every year and a half, it can linger in one sign for several months, so more people than usual are born with that Venus sign. You generally don't need a birth time to know your Venus sign, unless Venus changed signs on your birthday. You do need the time to know which house it falls in.
The twelve Venus signs in brief
These are short sketches of tendencies astrologers associate with each placement. Read them as starting points, not job descriptions, and pair them with the wider portrait in our zodiac sign profiles.
- Venus in Aries: falls fast and enjoys the chase. Attracted to confidence and directness; bored by too much hinting.
- Venus in Taurus: loyal, sensual and unhurried. Shows love through good food, touch and staying power.
- Venus in Gemini: flirts with words. Needs a partner who's interesting to talk to at midnight and again at breakfast.
- Venus in Cancer: protective and nurturing. Love looks like remembering how you take your tea and checking you got home safely.
- Venus in Leo: generous and openly affectionate. Wants romance with a bit of ceremony, and to be adored in return.
- Venus in Virgo: shows love in the details and through practical help. Discerning about who gets close. More in our guide to Venus in Virgo in relationships.
- Venus in Libra: charming and partnership-minded. Values fairness, beauty and a relationship that feels balanced.
- Venus in Scorpio: intense, private and loyal. Wants depth or nothing. Read more about Venus in Scorpio in love.
- Venus in Sagittarius: warm, frank and freedom-loving. Attracted to people who make life feel bigger.
- Venus in Capricorn: serious about commitment. Shows love by building something together and keeping its word.
- Venus in Aquarius: friendship first. Values independence and a partner who accepts its odd edges.
- Venus in Pisces: romantic, forgiving and imaginative. Loves generously and needs a partner who is gentle with that.
Dignity, detriment and why some Venus signs get a bad name
Traditional astrology ranks how comfortable each planet is in each sign, a system called essential dignity. Venus is at home, in domicile, in Taurus and Libra, the signs it rules. It's exalted in Pisces, where its love is boundless and forgiving. It's in detriment in Scorpio and Aries, the signs opposite its own, and in fall in Virgo, the sign opposite its exaltation.
Those words sound harsh, and old texts can be gloomy about them. Most modern astrologers read them as a question of style rather than quality. A planet in detriment or fall works in a mode unlike its natural one, which can mean more effort, more self-awareness and a more distinctive way of loving. Plenty of people with Venus in Scorpio or Virgo have deep, lasting relationships. Their love simply looks different from the gentle, easy Venus of the textbooks.
Venus, Mars and the Moon: who does what
It helps to separate the three placements people most often confuse.
- Venus is what you're drawn to, and how you attract and receive affection. Think of what you'd put into a perfect date.
- Mars is how you pursue what you want: your drive, how you act on desire and how you handle conflict.
- The Moon is what you need to feel safe once the relationship is established: comfort, routine, emotional care.
You can have a Venus that loves the thrill of something new and a Moon that needs a quiet, settled home. Many people do. Knowing both helps you explain yourself to a partner, which is more useful than any compatibility score. For the Moon's side of the story, see your moon sign in relationships.
Comparing two people's Venus and Mars signs, and the aspects between them, is a staple of relationship astrology. Someone whose Mars sits in your Venus sign, or makes a close angle to your Venus, is often read as a source of chemistry. The Love Compatibility Report makes that comparison across both full charts.
Questions readers ask
How do I find my Venus sign?
You need your birth date, and occasionally your birth time if Venus changed signs that day. A birth chart calculator will show it, along with the house it falls in, which needs your birth time and place. Expect it to be your sun sign or within two signs of it.
Is Venus sign compatibility more important than sun sign compatibility?
For romantic attraction, many astrologers would say Venus tells you more, since it's the planet of attraction. A partner whose Sun, Moon or Ascendant falls in your Venus sign, or makes a close aspect to your Venus, is often read as an easy fit. Sun signs still describe whether your broader lives and goals mesh.
What if my Venus is in the same sign as my Sun?
Then your style in love tends to match your broader personality, and people often find you easy to read romantically. A Taurus with Venus in Taurus usually loves the way you'd expect a Taurus to love, only more so.
Does Venus in detriment mean I'm bad at relationships?
No. Detriment and fall are traditional technical terms for a planet working outside its preferred style, not a forecast. They can point to areas where love takes more conscious effort, which often makes people more thoughtful partners, not worse ones.
