Each zodiac sign has a ruling planet that astrologers say shapes its character. Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus by Venus, Gemini by Mercury, Cancer by the Moon, Leo by the Sun, Virgo by Mercury, Libra by Venus, Scorpio by Pluto, Sagittarius by Jupiter, Capricorn by Saturn, Aquarius by Uranus and Pisces by Neptune. Before the outer planets were discovered, Scorpio was ruled by Mars, Aquarius by Saturn and Pisces by Jupiter, and many astrologers still use those traditional rulers alongside the modern ones.
Rulerships are one of the oldest ideas in astrology and one of the most useful. Here's the full table, the pattern behind it, how the modern planets were added, and how to find the ruler that matters most in your own chart.
All twelve rulers in one table
| Sign | Ruling planet | Traditional ruler | What the planet brings |
|---|---|---|---|

| Taurus | Venus | Venus | Pleasure, values, steadiness |
| Gemini | Mercury | Mercury | Words, curiosity, connection |
| Cancer | Moon | Moon | Feeling, memory, care |
| Leo | Sun | Sun | Self-expression, warmth, pride |
| Virgo | Mercury | Mercury | Analysis, skill, usefulness |
| Libra | Venus | Venus | Harmony, fairness, partnership |
| Scorpio | Pluto | Mars | Depth, intensity, transformation |
| Sagittarius | Jupiter | Jupiter | Growth, meaning, adventure |
| Capricorn | Saturn | Saturn | Structure, ambition, time |
| Aquarius | Uranus | Saturn | Originality, independence, ideals |
| Pisces | Neptune | Jupiter | Imagination, compassion, faith |
A sign's ruler is sometimes called its "home" planet, and astrologers say a planet in the sign it rules is in its domicile, working at its most natural. Mars in Aries, Venus in Taurus and the Moon in Cancer are all at home. Our zodiac signs pages describe each sign in full.
The old pattern behind the rulerships
The traditional scheme, set out by Ptolemy in the second century and older still, has an elegant symmetry.
The two lights, the Sun and the Moon, rule the two signs of high summer in the northern hemisphere: Leo for the Sun and Cancer for the Moon. Then the five visible planets are assigned in order of their speed and distance, each taking one sign on either side of that pair:
- Mercury, the fastest, rules the next signs out: Gemini and Virgo.
- Venus rules the next pair: Taurus and Libra.
- Mars rules Aries and Scorpio.
- Jupiter rules Pisces and Sagittarius.
- Saturn, the slowest and farthest visible planet, rules Aquarius and Capricorn, the two signs opposite the Sun and Moon.
So every planet except the lights rules two signs, one of each polarity. That's why Gemini and Virgo share Mercury's mind but use it differently, one airy and talkative, one earthy and exacting, and why Taurus and Libra both love beauty, in the body and in balance respectively.
When Uranus, Neptune and Pluto joined
The scheme held for well over a thousand years, until telescopes found new planets. William Herschel discovered Uranus in 1781. Neptune was found in 1846 by Johann Galle, using predictions by Urbain Le Verrier. Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto in 1930.
Over the following decades, astrologers gave each a sign whose themes seemed to match: Uranus, the planet of sudden change and invention, to Aquarius; Neptune, of dreams and dissolution, to Pisces; Pluto, of depth and power, to Scorpio. Those are now the standard modern rulers.
Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union in 2006, but astrologers still use it; astrology has always counted the Sun and Moon as "planets" too, in the old sense of wanderers in the sky. Many astrologers read Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces through both rulers, modern and traditional, and find each adds something.
Exaltation, detriment and fall
Rulership is one part of a larger traditional scheme called dignity, which ranks how comfortable a planet is in each sign.
- Exaltation is a sign where a planet is especially powerful or honored: the Sun in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mercury in Virgo, Venus in Pisces, Mars in Capricorn, Jupiter in Cancer, Saturn in Libra.
- Detriment is the sign opposite a planet's home, where it works against the grain: Mars in Libra, Venus in Scorpio, the Moon in Capricorn.
- Fall is the sign opposite its exaltation: the Sun in Libra, Mars in Cancer, Saturn in Aries.
A planet in detriment or fall isn't bad. It means the planet has to work in an unfamiliar style, and many people with those placements become unusually skilled at it. Our guides to Mars sign meaning and Mercury sign meaning show how that plays out for two planets.
Your chart ruler: the planet that rules your rising sign
Most people know the ruler of their Sun sign. Astrologers often say the more personal ruler is the one that rules your rising sign, called the chart ruler.
A made-up example: Libra rising, so Venus is the chart ruler. This person's Venus is in Cancer in the tenth house. Read together, that's someone whose whole chart is steered by Venus's need for harmony and connection, expressed through Cancer's care, and lived out in career and public life. They might work in a caring or hospitable profession, and be known professionally for making people feel at home.
To find your own, look up your Ascendant with the rising sign calculator, then find that sign's ruler on a free birth chart and note its sign and house. The same method works for any house: the ruler of the sign on your tenth house cusp, for instance, says a lot about your career, as our guide to the Midheaven sign explains. Rulers also shape the three zodiac decans inside each sign.
Ruling planets in the days of the week
The planets' rulerships survive in a place most people never notice: the names of the days. Sunday is the Sun's day and Monday the Moon's. Saturday is Saturn's. In English, the other four are named for Norse and Germanic gods matched with the Roman ones: Tuesday for Tiw (Mars), Wednesday for Woden (Mercury), Thursday for Thor (Jupiter) and Friday for Frigg (Venus). French keeps the Roman names closer to the surface: mardi, mercredi, jeudi, vendredi.
So a Libra or Taurus, ruled by Venus, could claim Friday, and an Aries or Scorpio Tuesday. It's a light way to use rulerships, but a real piece of their history.
Questions readers ask
What is my ruling planet?
Usually people mean the ruler of their Sun sign, from the table above. Astrologers also look closely at the ruler of your rising sign, your chart ruler, which needs a birth time to find.
Which signs share a ruling planet?
Gemini and Virgo share Mercury, and Taurus and Libra share Venus. In the traditional system, Aries and Scorpio share Mars, Sagittarius and Pisces share Jupiter, and Capricorn and Aquarius share Saturn.
Is Pluto still the ruler of Scorpio?
For most modern astrologers, yes, with Mars as the traditional co-ruler. Pluto's change to dwarf planet status in 2006 was an astronomical decision and didn't change how astrologers use it.
Do the Sun and Moon count as planets in astrology?
Yes. Astrology uses "planet" in the ancient sense of a body that moves against the fixed stars, so the Sun and Moon are included, even though astronomers classify them as a star and a moon.
