The eleventh house in astrology is about the people you choose to stand alongside and the future you're hoping for: friends, groups and communities, networks and allies, patrons and supporters, and your long-range wishes. Its natural sign is Aquarius, ruled by Uranus in modern astrology and Saturn in traditional astrology, and it's the house where Jupiter, the planet of good fortune, was said to be happiest. Whatever sits in your eleventh, along with the sign on its cusp, describes the company you keep and what you're working toward.
Family is given; partners are chosen one at a time. The eleventh is the circle you build around yourself, and the shape of the life you'd like it to help you reach.
The house of the Good Spirit
Hellenistic astrologers called the eleventh the place of the Good Spirit, and it was one of the most favorable houses in the chart. Jupiter, the greater benefic, rejoiced here. The house next door, the twelfth house, was its gloomy twin, the place of the Bad Spirit, where Saturn rejoiced. And straight across the wheel sits the fifth, the place of Good Fortune, where Venus rejoiced. So the two benefics face each other over the chart: Venus with private pleasures, Jupiter with friends and shared hopes. Our guide to the fifth house covers the other side.
The eleventh makes a sextile to the first house, one of the classic harmonious aspects, and it follows the tenth, the house of action and career. Counting from the tenth, it's the tenth's second house, the resources that come from what you do. That derived-house logic shows up in the seventeenth-century list of the English astrologer William Lilly, which reads like a royal court: friends and friendship, hope, trust and confidence, praise or blame; favorites, councillors and courtiers; a king's allies; and the king's treasury. In other words, the support and rewards that gather around someone in a position to act. Our guide to the 12 houses in astrology shows how the eleventh fits among the succedent houses, the ones that follow each angle.
Friends, groups and causes: the modern eleventh
Modern astrologers have kept the friendship and the hope, and widened the court into community:
- Friends: the chosen kind, as distinct from family and lovers.
- Groups and teams: clubs, choirs, sports teams, fan communities, the group chat with twelve people in it.
- Networks: colleagues across companies, professional bodies, the people you can call for an introduction.
- Causes: activism, volunteering, campaigns, anything you do for the common good.
- Hopes and long-range goals: where you'd like to be in ten years, and what you'd like the world to look like.
- Patrons and supporters: the people who back you, and the benefits that come through your work and connections.
The modern link with Aquarius and Uranus adds a taste for the future, for technology and for collective change. Traditional astrology, which gave Aquarius to Saturn, adds the structure that groups need to last: membership rules, shared duties, the friend who actually books the table.
Your eleventh house sign and the company you keep
- Aries: friends who are bold and active; you're often the one who starts the group.
- Taurus: a small, loyal circle, built slowly over shared meals and years.
- Gemini: a wide, chatty network; you know someone for everything.
- Cancer: friends become family, and the group needs to feel like home.
- Leo: a warm, generous circle, often creative, with you somewhere near its center.
- Virgo: friendships built on helping each other; groups with a useful purpose.
- Libra: sociable and diplomatic; friends met through partners, art and social life.
- Scorpio: few friends, deeply trusted; groups with an intense shared purpose.
- Sagittarius: friends from everywhere, travel companions, people who argue about ideas.
- Capricorn: fewer, older or established friends; goals pursued with a long plan.
- Aquarius: in its natural house; eccentric friends, causes, and an instinct for community.
- Pisces: idealistic, compassionate groups, spiritual or artistic circles; boundaries worth watching.
Then find the ruler. With Taurus on the eleventh, look at Venus: in the second house, friendships and money may overlap, such as a business with friends; in the fifth, friends tend to be the people you have the most fun with.
Planets in the eleventh house: who you gather
- Sun: identity found through groups and shared goals; often the organizer or quiet leader among friends.
- Moon: friends treated as family; feelings shared in the group, and a need to belong.
- Mercury: networking, introductions, ideas thrashed out in committees and chats.
- Venus: charm in groups, friendships that turn romantic, artistic circles.
- Mars: activism, team sport, energy for a cause, and the occasional falling-out within the group.
- Jupiter: in its joy; a wide network, generous friends and helpful patrons.
- Saturn: the traditional ruler of Aquarius; few friends but lasting ones, responsibility in groups, goals reached slowly.
- Uranus: the modern ruler; unusual friends, sudden changes in your circle, a pull toward progressive causes.
- Neptune: idealistic causes and spiritual communities; disappointment if friends are put on a pedestal.
- Pluto: influential groups and intense friendships; a circle that changes completely more than once.
Hopes, wishes and long-range plans
The eleventh is also the house of hope, and astrologers often read it as your relationship with the future: what you wish for, how much you believe it can happen, and who you think will help. A busy eleventh can describe a natural planner with a vision board on the wall; a quiet one, someone who lives more in the present.
If you want a practical prompt, it's this one: list three things you hope for, then the people already in your life who share each hope. That's the eleventh house at work. For how sun signs tend to get on as friends, our guide to zodiac friendship compatibility goes sign by sign.
If your eleventh house is empty
An empty eleventh doesn't mean you'll have no friends. You read it through its cusp sign and the ruler of that sign, the method explained in our guide to empty houses in a birth chart.
Here's an invented case: Leo on the eleventh house cusp, which makes the Sun its ruler, with the Sun in the third. Friendships are warm and generous (Leo), and they grow through third-house matters: neighbors, siblings, classmates, the local community. The friend group formed at the bus stop twenty years ago fits.
On house systems: in whole sign houses the eleventh is the eleventh sign from your rising sign, and the Midheaven sometimes falls in it, which ties career closely to networks and groups. In Placidus, which our free birth chart uses, the Midheaven always opens the tenth, and the eleventh begins at a calculated degree beyond it. Our guide on how to read a birth chart for beginners shows how to follow a house ruler from one part of the chart to another.
Questions readers ask
Which house rules friends in astrology?
The eleventh is the main friendship house, covering friends, groups and communities. Some early astrologers also gave friendship to the third, which modern readers often use for childhood and neighborhood friends.
Is the eleventh house lucky?
Tradition thought so: it was the place of the Good Spirit and Jupiter's favorite house. Astrologers today read it as support that comes through people, such as a friend's introduction or a group that backs your idea, rather than luck out of nowhere.
What does Saturn in the eleventh house mean?
Astrologers describe a person with a small, carefully chosen circle, often of older or very reliable friends, who takes responsibility in groups. Goals tend to be reached slowly, and friendships often improve with age.
What's the difference between the fifth and eleventh houses?
The fifth is personal pleasure: romance, creativity, play for its own sake. The eleventh is shared hopes: friends, groups and goals that involve other people. One is the solo project; the other is what you build with the crew.
