An empty house in your birth chart is simply a house with no planets in it, and it doesn't mean that area of life is missing, blocked or doomed. With twelve houses and only ten planets, every chart has at least two empty houses, and most have several. Astrologers read an empty house through the sign on its cusp, the planet that rules that sign, and the planets that pass through it over the years.

If you've just looked at your chart and found nothing in your seventh house, take a breath. Here's why empty houses are normal and how to read one properly.

Why every chart has empty houses

The arithmetic settles it. Astrologers use ten main planets, counting the Sun and Moon, and there are twelve houses. Even if every planet landed in a different house, two would be left over.

In practice, planets bunch up. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, and Venus never more than about 47, so those three often share a house or sit in neighboring ones. The slow outer planets can cluster too. A chart with four, five or six empty houses is perfectly ordinary, and a chart with a stellium, three or more planets in one place, will have even more.

An empty house isn't a silent one. It still has a sign, a ruler and a job. It just doesn't have a resident, so you read it by looking at who owns the building.

How to read an empty house in three steps

  1. Find the sign on the cusp. The cusp is the line where the house begins. Your chart shows which sign is there.
  2. Find that sign's ruling planet. Aries is ruled by Mars, Taurus by Venus, and so on. Our guide to the ruling planets of the zodiac signs has the full list, modern and traditional.
  3. Find where the ruler sits. Its sign, its house and the aspects it makes describe how the empty house's subject plays out in your life.

A worked example

Take a made-up chart with Cancer rising and an empty seventh house, the house of partnership. Capricorn is on the seventh house cusp, so Saturn rules it. Saturn sits in Aries in the tenth house, the house of career and public life.

Read together: partnership matters (the seventh always does), and it's approached seriously and slowly, in Capricorn style. The ruler in the tenth ties relationships to work and reputation. This person might meet a partner through their career, choose someone established and ambitious, or find that commitment comes into its own once their working life is settled. Saturn in Aries adds impatience inside the caution: wanting to get it right and wanting it now.

There's no planet in the seventh house, and there's still a detailed story about relationships. That's how every empty house works.

The empty houses people worry about

A few come up again and again:

  • An empty seventh house doesn't mean you won't marry or partner. Plenty of happily committed people have one. Read the cusp sign and its ruler instead. Our guide to the seventh house in astrology covers the house in depth.
  • An empty tenth house doesn't mean no career. The Midheaven sign, which sits on or near the tenth cusp, still describes your public direction, and its ruler shows where your ambition gets channeled.
  • An empty second house doesn't mean no money. It may simply mean money isn't where your chart's attention is concentrated.
  • An empty fifth house doesn't mean no children, creativity or fun. Astrology can't tell you whether you'll have children, and an empty house certainly can't.

Some astrologers suggest that an empty house is an area of life that runs fairly smoothly, without demanding constant attention. Others say only that its story is told through its ruler. Neither reading treats it as a lack.

When the planets move through

Your birth chart is fixed, but the planets keep moving, and over time every one of them passes through every house. Astrologers call these transits. When a planet travels through one of your empty houses, that area of life tends to get a turn in the spotlight.

The Moon passes through each of your houses every month. Jupiter, which spends about a year in each sign, brings a year of growth or opportunity to each house in turn. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, and its passage through an empty house is often described as a time to build structure there. Someone with an empty fourth house might find that Saturn's transit through it coincides with buying a home or caring for a parent.

How house systems change what's empty

Different house systems divide the chart differently, and a planet near a cusp can move from one house to another depending on the system. Our free birth chart uses Placidus, the most common system in modern Western astrology. In whole sign houses, where each house is one complete sign, a planet in the last few degrees of a house may land in the next house instead.

Quadrant systems like Placidus can also produce intercepted signs, a sign that sits wholly inside a house without touching either cusp, especially for births far from the equator. When that happens, the house has two signs and two rulers, and astrologers read both.

So if a house looks empty in one system and not another, it's a sign that the planet near the boundary has a foot in both areas of life. Our guide to the 12 houses in astrology explains the main systems and what each house covers.

Questions readers ask

Is an empty house bad?

No. Every chart has empty houses, and they say nothing about how good or bad that area of life will be. Read the house through the sign on its cusp and where that sign's ruler sits.

What does an empty seventh house mean?

Only that no planet was in your house of partnership when you were born. It doesn't predict being single. The sign on the seventh cusp and its ruling planet describe how you approach relationships.

Do Chiron or the lunar nodes count?

Most astrologers count only the ten planets when they call a house empty, but they do read Chiron, the nodes and other points if they fall there. A house with only the North Node in it, for example, still carries a strong theme.

How do I find the ruler of an empty house?

Note the sign on the house cusp in your chart, then look up that sign's ruling planet. Wherever that planet sits, by sign and house, is where the empty house's story gets told.
