Zodiac sign colors are traditional associations rather than fixed rules, and no single authority decides them. The pairings you'll see most often are red for Aries, green for Taurus, yellow for Gemini, silver for Cancer, gold for Leo, earthy browns for Virgo, pink for Libra, deep red or black for Scorpio, purple for Sagittarius, dark gray for Capricorn, electric blue for Aquarius and sea green for Pisces. Most of them come from each sign's ruling planet and element.
Lists elsewhere will differ, sometimes a lot. Here's the common modern set, the logic behind it, and the older schemes that say something else entirely.
Zodiac sign colors at a glance
| Sign | Colors often associated | The usual reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Red, scarlet | Mars, the red planet; fire |
| Taurus | Green, soft pink | Venus; earth and growing things |
| Gemini | Yellow, light gray | Mercury; air and quick light |
| Cancer | Silver, white, pearl | The Moon |
| Leo | Gold, orange | The Sun |
| Virgo | Brown, navy, sage green | Mercury; earth and harvest |
| Libra | Pink, pale blue | Venus; air and harmony |
| Scorpio | Deep red, burgundy, black | Mars and Pluto; water at depth |
| Sagittarius | Purple, royal blue | Jupiter |
| Capricorn | Dark gray, brown, black | Saturn; earth in winter |
| Aquarius | Electric blue, turquoise | Uranus; air |
| Pisces | Sea green, lavender | Neptune; water |
If your own sign's colors leave you cold, look at your Moon or rising sign's colors too. Many people prefer them, for the same reason many people relate more to their Moon or rising sign than to their Sun.
Where the color associations come from
Three strands run through most lists.
The ruling planets. Each sign has a planetary ruler, and the planets have carried colors for a very long time. Mars looks red in the night sky, so it took red. The Sun took gold and the Moon silver, matching the metals the old alchemical tradition gave them. Venus, the planet of beauty, picks up green and pink. Jupiter, the planet of abundance and ceremony, usually takes purple or royal blue. Saturn, the slow outer limit of the old sky, whose alchemical metal was lead, takes black and lead gray. Our guide to the ruling planets of the zodiac signs has the full list of rulers.
The elements. Fire signs tend to get warm reds, oranges and golds; earth signs browns, greens and deep neutrals; air signs pale yellows, grays and sky blues; water signs blues, sea greens and silvers. That's why Gemini and Virgo, both ruled by Mercury, end up with such different palettes: one is air and one is earth. Our guide to zodiac elements and modalities explains the four.
The sign's character. The rest is mood. Scorpio's black is about privacy and depth, and Aquarius gets electric blue because it's the sign of the unexpected.
Older and esoteric color schemes
Go back a few centuries and the colors change. William Lilly, the seventeenth-century English astrologer, gave each sign a color, and in the nineteenth-century edition of his introduction to astrology they read nothing like a modern list: Aries is "white mixed with red", Taurus "white mixed with lemon", Cancer "green or russet", Virgo "black speckled with blue", Scorpio "brown", Aquarius "a sky colour with blue" and Pisces a "white, glistening colour".
The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, the late nineteenth-century magical society whose ideas shaped much of modern tarot, took another approach again. It ran the twelve signs around the color wheel in order: Aries scarlet, Taurus red-orange, Gemini orange, Cancer amber, Leo greenish yellow, Virgo yellowish green, Libra emerald green, Scorpio green-blue, Sagittarius blue, Capricorn indigo, Aquarius violet and Pisces crimson. The same system gave each sign a tarot card, and our guide to tarot cards for each zodiac sign shows which card goes with which sign.
Neither scheme is more correct than the modern list. Between them, they show how much a sign's color has depended on who was doing the choosing.
Using your sign's colors
None of this needs belief to be enjoyable. A few low-key ways people use their colors:
- As a personal palette. A scarf, a notebook cover, a phone case or a front door in your sign's colors, or your Moon sign's, if those suit you better.
- For gifts. Wrapping a birthday present in the recipient's sign color is a small, thoughtful touch that takes no extra time.
- In rituals and journaling. Some people pick a candle by sign color. Candle colors have their own separate set of meanings, which our guide to candle color meanings explains.
- As a prompt. Wearing your sign's color on a day you want to feel more like yourself is a small cue you can see in the mirror.
Mixing Sun, Moon and rising colors
You don't have to stop at one sign. A birth chart gives you three signs worth knowing, and their colors can make a small personal palette that's harder to find on a generic list.
Take a Leo Sun with a Pisces Moon and Capricorn rising: gold for the Sun, sea green for the Moon, charcoal for the rising sign. Gold on charcoal with a touch of sea green is a perfectly wearable combination, and it says more about that particular person than gold alone. If two of your three signs share an element, let that element's family of colors lead and use the third as an accent.
Colors, crystals and flowers
Colors travel with other sign associations. Many zodiac crystal lists choose stones partly by color, such as red-orange carnelian for Aries and pale blue aquamarine for Pisces. Our list of crystals for each zodiac sign has the full set, and our guide to zodiac sign flowers does the same for blooms, with the same caveat: traditions differ, and your own taste counts.
Questions readers ask
What is my zodiac color?
Find your sign in the table above. If you're not sure of your sign, our guide to what your zodiac sign is has the dates. Treat the color as a suggestion: if another shade feels more like you, that's a fine choice too.
What is the lucky color for my sign?
"Lucky colors" are folklore, and a pleasant one, but no color will change how your day goes. Most lucky-color lists simply repeat the sign colors above, so pick the one you enjoy wearing.
Why do different websites give different colors?
Because no authority sets them. Writers draw on ruling planets, elements, older textbooks and their own sense of each sign, so lists overlap without ever quite matching.
Can I use my Moon or rising sign's color instead?
Yes. Plenty of people feel more like their Moon or rising sign than their Sun sign, and their colors follow. You can find both in a free birth chart.
