The crystals most often paired with the zodiac signs are carnelian for Aries, rose quartz for Taurus, citrine for Gemini, moonstone for Cancer, tiger's eye for Leo, moss agate for Virgo, lapis lazuli for Libra, obsidian for Scorpio, turquoise for Sagittarius, garnet for Capricorn, amethyst for Aquarius and aquamarine for Pisces. There's no official list, and books and shops often disagree, so treat these as popular pairings. The best stone for you is one whose traditional associations suit what you'd like more of.

Why zodiac crystal lists never quite agree

Look at three websites and you'll find three different stones for Virgo. That's because the modern lists are built from a mix of reasoning:

  • Borrowed birthstones. Many zodiac stones are simply the birthstone of the month a sign mostly covers. Capricorn gets January's garnet, Aquarius gets February's amethyst, Pisces gets March's aquamarine. Our guide to birthstones by month has the full monthly list.
  • Element colors. Fire signs get red, orange and gold stones; water signs get blues, sea-greens and milky white.
  • Ruling planets. Signs ruled by Venus tend to get pink and green stones, the Moon's sign gets moonstone, and the Sun's sign gets golden ones. Our guide to the ruling planets of the zodiac signs explains which planet goes with which sign.
  • Marketing. Some pairings are just what a seller had in stock.

None of this makes the pairings meaningless. It just means you're free to swap.

Sign by sign: what each stone is associated with

These are the traditional associations used in crystal practice, not properties of the minerals.

Aries: carnelian

An orange to red chalcedony associated with courage and getting started. It suits a sign that likes to go first, and it's tough enough for a pocket.

Taurus: rose quartz

Pale pink quartz associated with tenderness and comfort. Taurus is ruled by Venus and loves things that feel good in the hand, which this stone does.

Gemini: citrine

Yellow quartz associated with brightness and quick thinking. Much of what's sold is heat-treated amethyst, which is worth knowing but isn't a problem.

Cancer: moonstone

A feldspar with a soft floating sheen, associated with the Moon, Cancer's ruler, and with intuition and home.

Leo: tiger's eye

Golden brown with a silky band of light, associated with confidence and warmth. A natural match for the Sun's sign.

Virgo: moss agate

Clear to milky chalcedony with green, plant-like patterns, associated with steady growth and gardens. It suits a sign that enjoys tending things.

Libra: lapis lazuli

Deep blue flecked with gold-colored pyrite, associated with truthful speech and fairness. Fitting for the sign of the scales.

Scorpio: obsidian

Natural volcanic glass, usually black, associated with protection and honest self-examination. Scorpio's taste for depth makes it a popular pairing.

Sagittarius: turquoise

A blue to green mineral long treasured in many cultures and associated with travel and good fortune. It's one of December's birthstones.

Capricorn: garnet

Usually deep red, associated with commitment and endurance. Its link with January makes it the classic Capricorn stone.

Aquarius: amethyst

Purple quartz associated with calm and clear thinking. Its name comes from the ancient Greek for "not intoxicated," from an old belief that it guarded against drunkenness.

Pisces: aquamarine

Pale blue-green beryl whose name means "sea water" in Latin, associated with calm and the sea. A gentle match for a water sign.

Choosing by your Moon or rising sign instead

Your Sun sign is only one part of a chart. Many people find that a stone chosen for another placement fits them better:

  • Moon sign for emotional comfort and what helps you feel at home. Find yours with the Moon sign calculator.
  • Rising sign for how you meet the world and the first impression you make. The rising sign calculator needs your birth time.
  • Venus sign for love and pleasure. Taurus and Libra stones suit many Venus placements.

A Leo Sun with a Cancer Moon, for example, might keep tiger's eye for the confident days and moonstone for the evenings at home. That's two stones, not a rule broken.

Caring for the stones on this list

Several zodiac stones need gentle handling:

  • Pearl, opal and turquoise are porous or water-sensitive. Don't soak them; wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth.
  • Selenite, often sold with moonstone for Cancer, is very soft and dissolves in water. Dust it dry.
  • Lapis lazuli and fluorite scratch more easily than quartz, and lapis is often dyed or waxed, so keep both out of long soaks.
  • Amethyst and rose quartz can fade in strong sunlight. Keep them off sunny windowsills.
  • Raw obsidian can have edges as sharp as broken glass. Buy tumbled pieces for a pocket.
  • Never make crystal water or "elixirs" to drink, and keep small stones away from young children and pets.

Questions readers ask

What is my zodiac crystal?

Find your Sun sign in the table above and start with the popular stone, or one from the "also suggested" column if you prefer its look. There's no single correct answer, so the stone you'll actually carry is the right one.

Is my zodiac stone the same as my birthstone?

Not always. Birthstones follow calendar months, while zodiac signs run from roughly the twentieth of one month to the twentieth of the next. Some zodiac lists borrow birthstones, which is why the two often overlap.

Can I use a crystal linked to a different sign?

Yes. Associations are suggestions, not memberships. If a Scorpio wants the calm associated with amethyst, amethyst is a fine choice.

Do zodiac crystals have special powers?

There's no reliable evidence that crystals affect your luck, health or personality. Many people still enjoy them as personal symbols and focus objects, and that is how we suggest using them. See your sign's profile in zodiac signs if you'd like to match a stone to a trait you want to build.
