The Moon passes through all twelve zodiac signs in a little over 27 days, spending a little over two days in each. Astrologers read the sign it's in on a given day as the emotional weather for everyone: Aries days run quick and impatient, Taurus days slow and comfortable, Gemini days chatty and scattered, and so on around the wheel. It's a shared backdrop, different from your own natal moon sign, and it's best used as a light prompt for how to pace the day.
Why the moon sign changes every two or three days
The zodiac is the band of sky along the ecliptic, the Sun's apparent yearly path, divided into twelve signs of 30 degrees each. The Sun takes a month to cross one sign. The Moon, much closer and much faster, moves about thirteen degrees a day, so it crosses a sign in roughly two to two and a half days, depending on where it is in its orbit. It moves faster near perigee, its closest point to Earth, and slower near apogee.
A full circuit of the signs takes about 27.3 days, a little shorter than the 29.5 days from one full moon to the next. That's why the full moon falls in a different sign each month: by the time the Moon is opposite the Sun again, the Sun has moved on by almost a whole sign.
Just before each change of sign, astrologers note a stretch called the void of course Moon, when the Moon has made its last major aspect in the old sign. That's explained in void of course moon.
How to find today's moon sign
You have a few options:
- Use our moon sign calculator with today's date. It's built for birth dates, but it works for any day, and it will tell you if the Moon changes sign during that date.
- Check the lunations. Our full moon and new moon calendars give the sign of each full and new moon, which anchors the cycle twice a month.
- Use an ephemeris or astrology calendar. These list the exact time the Moon enters each sign. Mind the time zone.
The moon phase today page shows the phase, which tells you the other half of the story: a waxing Moon in Leo feels different from a waning one.
The twelve moon days
These are traditional associations, written as tendencies. They describe the general mood astrologers link with each sign, not what will happen to you.
Moon in Aries
Fast, direct and short on patience. Good for starting small tasks you've been putting off, making a quick decision, or a hard workout. Less good for delicate conversations. If someone snaps at you in traffic, it may just be an Aries Moon.
Moon in Taurus
The Moon is traditionally exalted here, at its most comfortable. Slow, steady and sensory. Good for cooking a proper meal, gardening, budgeting, and a long bath. The risk is digging in: Taurus Moon days make it easy to refuse to budge, or to treat yourself a little too generously.
Moon in Gemini
Talkative and quick-witted. Good for errands, emails, short trips, catching up with siblings and neighbors, and learning something new in small bites. Less good for focus. Expect the forty-tab browser day.
Moon in Cancer
The Moon's own sign. Home, family, food and memory. Good for cooking for people you love, calling home, tidying the nest, and looking through old photographs. Feelings run close to the surface, so it's easy to take things personally.
Moon in Leo
Warm, expressive and a little theatrical. Good for creative work, play, parties, time with children, and saying out loud what you like about someone. The shadow is needing applause: a Leo Moon day can make an unanswered message feel like a snub.
Moon in Virgo
Practical and tidy-minded. Good for admin, health appointments, cleaning out a cupboard, editing a draft, and fixing the small thing that's bothered you for months. Watch the drift into nitpicking, worry or criticizing other people's dishwasher loading.
Moon in Libra
Social, gracious and keen to keep the peace. Good for meetings, negotiation, dates, collaborations and making a room look nicer. The risk is indecision and saying yes to keep everyone happy. A Libra Moon is a fine day to ask what you want, not just what's fair.
Moon in Scorpio
The Moon is traditionally in its fall here, least at ease, which astrologers read as intensity. Private, probing and serious. Good for research, real conversations, shared finances, and clearing out what you no longer need. Watch suspicion and old grudges coming back for another round.
Moon in Sagittarius
Restless, optimistic and outward-looking. Good for travel, study, planning something big, being outdoors, and conversations about meaning. The shadow is overpromising, or bluntness that lands harder than you meant.
Moon in Capricorn
The Moon is in its detriment here, opposite its home sign of Cancer, so feelings tend to be managed rather than expressed. Serious and productive. Good for work, long-range planning, setting up a system, and tackling something difficult. Less good for asking for comfort. Remember to stop at a reasonable hour.
Moon in Aquarius
Cool, inventive and group-minded. Good for friends, teams, causes, technology and unusual ideas. Watch emotional distance: an Aquarius Moon can make people seem aloof, or argue a point just to be contrary.
Moon in Pisces
Soft, dreamy and porous. Good for rest, music, art, kindness, and listening to hunches. Deadlines tend to slip on Pisces Moon days, so set a reminder. Some people find these the most restful days of the month; others find them foggy.
Today's Moon versus your natal Moon
The day's moon sign is the same for everyone. Your natal moon sign is the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and astrologers read it as your own emotional style: what comforts you and how you react under stress. That's a much more personal piece of a chart, and we cover it in moon sign in relationships.
The two interact. When the day's Moon passes through your own moon sign, about once a month, many astrologers read it as a small emotional reset, and the moment it returns to the exact degree of your natal Moon is called the lunar return. When it passes through the sign opposite, some people notice they feel more out of step. If you have your birth chart from our birth chart calculator, you can also follow the Moon through your houses: astrologers read each stay of two days or so as briefly highlighting that house's part of life.
And it's one factor among many. A day with the Moon in Taurus can still be frantic if your inbox says so.
Try it for one lunar month
The easiest way to find out whether any of this means something to you is to watch for a month.
- Each morning, note the Moon's sign. One word is enough.
- Each evening, write one line about the day's mood. Yours, your household's, your workplace's.
- After four weeks, read it back. Look for patterns, and be honest about the misses as well as the hits. We all notice the hits more.
Some people find the moon signs give them a useful vocabulary for the month's ups and downs. Others find no pattern and drop it, which is a perfectly good result. Gardeners who plant by the signs use the same daily Moon in a very practical way, covered in gardening by the moon.
Questions readers ask
How long is the Moon in each sign?
About two and a quarter days on average, ranging from just under two days to about two and a half, depending on how fast the Moon is moving. You will often see it rounded to two and a half. It moves fastest when it's closest to Earth.
Is the moon sign of the day the same everywhere?
Yes. The Moon enters a sign at one instant worldwide. Because clocks differ by time zone, the local time of the change differs, so on a given calendar date the Moon may be listed in one sign in Tokyo and the previous sign in Los Angeles for part of the day.
What is a lunar return?
The moment each month when the Moon returns to the exact position it held when you were born, about every 27.3 days. Astrologers sometimes draw a chart for it and read it as a forecast for the coming month, or simply as an emotional check-in.
Does the moon sign of the day affect my horoscope?
Daily horoscopes often take the Moon's sign into account, since it's the fastest-moving influence and sets the tone for a day or two. It's read alongside the Sun and planets rather than on its own.
