Halloween, Samhain and the Days of the Dead all fall in Scorpio season, the month from October 23 to November 21 when the Sun moves through Scorpio. Scorpio is the fixed water sign ruled by Pluto, with Mars as its traditional ruler, and astrologers read the month much as the calendar does: a time for depth, honesty, endings, privacy and what lasts. The first day can shift by a day either side of October 23.
Why Scorpio season holds the festivals of the dead
Scorpio is a fixed sign, so its month sits in the middle of the Northern Hemisphere autumn, roughly halfway between the September equinox and the December solstice. The Gaelic year marked that halfway point with Samhain, from sunset on October 31 into November 1: the end of the harvest, the start of winter, and a night when the boundary with the Otherworld was said to grow thin. Many of its customs flowed into Halloween. Our Samhain traditions guide tells the longer story.
The Western Christian calendar keeps All Saints' Day on November 1 and All Souls' Day on November 2, and Mexico's Día de Muertos, with its family altars, marigolds and visits to graves, centers on the same two days. Different cultures, one shared instinct: as the year darkens, remember the people you've lost.
Astrologers don't claim the sign shaped any of this. But Scorpio's themes, death and renewal, what's hidden, what we inherit, fit the season so closely that in tarot's Golden Dawn tradition Scorpio's card is Death, a card about endings that make room rather than about dying.
In the Southern Hemisphere, Scorpio season falls in the middle of spring, and the same sign reads more as regeneration than as decay.
Mars, Pluto and the Moon in fall
Scorpio's two rulers give the season its two colors. Mars, the traditional ruler, brings focus, will and a fighter's patience: Scorpio's Mars waits rather than charges. Pluto, given to Scorpio by modern astrologers after its discovery in 1930, adds power, depth and the theme of total change.
The other dignities sharpen the picture. The Moon is in fall in Scorpio and Venus is in detriment, which tradition reads as feelings and affection running deep, private and all-or-nothing rather than light and easy. Some modern astrologers also place Uranus's exaltation here, for the sign's appetite for breakthroughs.
So astrologers describe Scorpio season as a month when small talk feels thin, secrets surface and people want the real version of things. The sign's shadow is suspicion, grudges and control: holding on so tightly that nothing can change.
The sky adds its own details. The brightest star of the constellation Scorpius, the red supergiant Antares, takes its name from the Greek for "rival of Ares," because its color rivals Mars, the sign's old ruler. And in one Greek myth the scorpion was sent to kill Orion the hunter, and the two were set on opposite sides of the sky, so that Orion sinks in the west as the scorpion rises in the east.
Clocks, bonfires and remembrance
A few more fixtures of the Scorpio season calendar:
- The clocks go back. In the UK and the European Union, daylight saving time ends on the last Sunday of October; in most of the US and Canada, on the first Sunday of November. Either way it happens in Scorpio season, and the evenings suddenly arrive an hour early.
- Bonfire Night, November 5 in Britain, fills the sky with fireworks and the air with woodsmoke.
- Remembrance Day in the UK and Commonwealth countries and Veterans Day in the US both fall on November 11.
Things to do in Scorpio season
- Clear something out properly. Not tidying: letting go. Scorpio is the sign of endings that make room.
- Have the honest conversation. The one you keep circling. Say it privately, plainly and once.
- Remember someone. Cook their recipe, tell a story about them, light a candle for them, and blow it out before you leave the room.
- Go deep on one thing. A long book, a research project, a skill that takes months to learn.
- Sort the shared paperwork. Scorpio is linked with the eighth house of joint resources, debts and inheritance. A Scorpio month is a sensible time to update passwords, check the joint bills and know where the important papers are.
- Use the dark evenings. Early nights are good for rest, films and the kind of talk that only happens late.
You don't need to do all six. Scorpio prefers one thing done thoroughly.
Scorpio birthdays
A Scorpio birthday lands among jack-o'-lanterns and early sunsets, which most Scorpios find entirely appropriate. If you'd like the day to mean a little more, our solar return birthday ritual is private, reflective and fits the sign. Born in late October or in November? Our guide to October Scorpio vs. November Scorpio explains the three decans; around October 22 to 24 or November 21 to 22, check a chart, since the boundary moves.
As always, the Sun is only part of the story. Someone with a Scorpio Moon feels this season in the gut, whatever their birthday. For the sign, see Scorpio traits, and for the month, the Scorpio monthly horoscope.
Questions readers ask
Is Halloween always in Scorpio season?
Yes. October 31 falls inside Scorpio season every year, since the Sun enters Scorpio around October 23. Samhain, All Saints' Day and Día de Muertos on November 1 and 2 do too.
Is Scorpio season a bad time?
No. Its reputation comes from the sign's intensity and the dark-season festivals, not from anything going wrong. Astrologers describe it as good for focus, honesty and the endings you've been putting off.
Why is Scorpio linked with death and rebirth?
Partly through its season in the north, when the leaves fall and the ground rests before spring, and partly through its rulers: Mars for struggle, Pluto for the underworld. Many astrologers give the sign three symbols, the scorpion, the eagle and the phoenix, as a path from sting to rising.
What comes after Scorpio season?
Sagittarius season, from November 22, which opens the windows again. Before Scorpio comes Libra season, the month of the scales.
