October Scorpios, born roughly October 23 to 31, fall in the sign's first decan, which astrologers describe as the most concentrated form of Scorpio: intense, private, determined, ruled by Pluto and Mars. November Scorpios are split. The first day of November usually still belongs to the first decan; from about November 2 to 11 is the second decan, which takes on Pisces and its rulers, Neptune and Jupiter; and from about November 12 to 21 is the third, which takes on Cancer and the Moon.

In other words, "November Scorpio" isn't one type, and the month is only a rough proxy. Here's how decans work for Scorpio and what astrologers associate with each, without pretending ten days on a calendar can define a person.

Why the month only gets you partway

Each zodiac sign covers 30 degrees of the Sun's yearly path, and astrologers divide each sign into three decans of 10 degrees. Because the Sun moves about a degree a day, each decan lasts roughly ten days.

Months are a human convention that doesn't line up with any of that. Scorpio begins around October 23, so October holds about nine days of the sign and November about three weeks. The first decan doesn't stop on October 31 just because the month does; it runs into the start of November.

The most common modern way to assign decans, and the one used here, is the triplicity system. The first decan belongs to the sign itself, the second to the next sign of the same element, and the third to the one after that. Scorpio is a water sign, so its decans follow the water signs in order: Scorpio, Pisces, Cancer.

There's also an older scheme, the Chaldean decans or faces, which assigns planets in a fixed repeating order and gives Scorpio's decans to Mars, the Sun and Venus. If you've come across that list, it isn't a mistake, just a different tradition.

Scorpio's three decans on the calendar

Approximate dates, which shift by about a day from year to year:

  • First decan, 0 to 10 degrees Scorpio: about October 23 to November 1. Ruled by Pluto, with Mars as the traditional ruler.
  • Second decan, 10 to 20 degrees: about November 2 to November 11. Takes on Pisces, ruled by Neptune, with Jupiter as the traditional ruler.
  • Third decan, 20 to 30 degrees: about November 12 to November 21. Takes on Cancer, ruled by the Moon.

If your birthday falls between October 31 and November 3, around November 11 to 13, or on November 21 or 22, which is also the line between Scorpio and Sagittarius, check the Sun's exact degree. A free birth chart shows it, for example "Sun at 19 degrees Scorpio," which is second decan.

Born in October: the first decan, Scorpio undiluted

The first decan doubles up on Scorpio's own rulers. Astrologers tend to describe these Scorpios as the most recognizably Scorpio of the three: intense, focused, private and perceptive, with strong willpower and a long memory. Pluto's association with transformation and Mars's with drive come through clearly.

In the tradition, this is the Scorpio most likely to keep their cards close and least likely to forgive a betrayal quickly. It's also the one described as most determined: once they decide on something, they tend to see it through. "Most Scorpio" doesn't mean best or worst Scorpio, mind you. It only means the sign's themes come through with the least blending. For the full sign profile, see our Scorpio traits page.

Early November: the Pisces decan

The second decan borrows from Pisces, so Neptune and Jupiter enter the picture. Astrologers describe these Scorpios as more imaginative, more spiritual and more compassionate, with Scorpio's depth turned toward art, intuition and empathy. Jupiter is said to add some optimism and generosity.

The tradition also notes the softer risks: a tendency to idealize people, to soak up other people's moods, or to escape into daydreams when life gets heavy. The intensity is still there. It's just more dreamlike.

Mid to late November: the Cancer decan

The third decan borrows from Cancer and the Moon. Astrologers describe these Scorpios as the most nurturing and family-minded of the three: protective of the people they love, emotionally perceptive, attached to home and to shared history. Scorpio's loyalty takes on a caretaking quality here.

In this tradition, the third decan can also be the most sensitive, with moods that run deep and a strong need for emotional security. A late-November Scorpio is often pictured as fiercely protective of their own.

What every Scorpio has in common

Whatever the decan, every Scorpio shares the sign's core: fixed water, a capacity for depth, loyalty and focus, and a preference for real connection over small talk. The decans shade that core. They don't replace it. If you want a quick, unscientific test, read all three descriptions and notice which one you'd most like to be true. That reaction often tells you more than the description does.

They're also a small detail next to the rest of the chart. Your Moon sign, rising sign and the placements of Venus and Mars shape you more than the third of Scorpio your Sun happens to occupy. A moon sign calculator is a good next step, and our guide to Scorpio woman personality traits gives a longer view of the sign. As with any astrology, treat decan descriptions as prompts for reflection, not a verdict.

Questions readers ask

Which Scorpio decan am I?

Check the degree of your Sun. Zero to 10 degrees Scorpio is the first decan, 10 to 20 the second, 20 to 30 the third. The dates above are close, but a chart settles it, especially near a boundary.

Are October Scorpios more intense than November Scorpios?

That's how the first decan is often described, since it's Scorpio's own. But intensity comes from the whole chart, not the decan. A November Scorpio with a Scorpio Moon can easily seem more intense than an October one with a Gemini Moon.

Is November 22 Scorpio or Sagittarius?

It depends on the year, the time and the place of birth. The Sun usually enters Sagittarius on November 21 or 22, so anyone born around then should check a chart.

Do Scorpio decans matter for compatibility?

Only a little. Each decan carries a hint of another water sign, which some astrologers mention when comparing charts, but the full charts matter far more. Our Scorpio best match guide covers the common pairings, and the Scorpio monthly horoscope offers a lighter, sign-level read.
