Libra season opens at the September equinox, when day and night are close to equal, and lasts until about October 22; on this site it runs September 23 to October 22. Libra is the cardinal air sign ruled by Venus, and astrologers associate the month with balance, fairness, partnership, manners, beauty and the decisions you've been weighing for weeks. The equinox falls on September 22 or 23, so the season's first day shifts slightly from year to year.
In the Northern Hemisphere it's the first month of autumn. In the Southern Hemisphere the same equinox opens spring.
The equinox and the scales
As a cardinal sign, Libra opens a season, and its season begins at one of the two moments in the year when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. "Equinox" means equal night, though the match isn't exact. On the equinox itself, daylight still runs a few minutes longer than darkness in most places, because sunrise and sunset are timed from the Sun's top edge and the atmosphere bends its light. In the north, the day of truly even light and dark comes a few days after the September equinox.
Libra's symbol, the scales, makes it the only zodiac sign represented by an object rather than a person or an animal. It hasn't always been that way. Greek astronomers saw these stars as the claws of the neighboring Scorpion, the Chelae, and the two brightest stars still carry Arabic names meaning "northern claw" and "southern claw." Babylonian astronomers had linked the stars with a balance long before, and the Romans settled on the scales as a constellation of its own. A balance at the point of the year where day and night even out is a neat fit.
Venus rules, Saturn is exalted
Libra's dignities explain the two moods astrologers find in its season.
Venus rules Libra. This is the social, aesthetic Venus: good company, good design, the dinner party where everyone gets a word in. In Libra season people tend to notice what's ugly or unfair a little more, and want to put it right. In a chart, Venus in Libra is described as love that wants grace and an equal footing. Libra's natural house is the seventh, of partners and open rivals: the people you sit across the table from, in love or in business.
Saturn is exalted in Libra. Saturn is the planet of rules, structure and commitment, and astrologers say it does its best work in the sign of justice: fair agreements, contracts read properly, promises kept on both sides. That's the serious side of the season, and the reason its tarot card in the Golden Dawn tradition is Justice.
Two harder dignities finish the picture. The Sun is in fall in Libra, the mirror of its exaltation in Aries: as the northern days shorten, the self steps back and the other person steps forward. Mars is in detriment here, so conflict tends to go underground, wrapped in politeness. The sign's familiar shadow is indecision and people-pleasing: weighing a choice for so long that the choice gets made for you.
Mabon, harvest suppers and Canadian Thanksgiving
The Libra season calendar is full of shared tables:
- The autumn equinox is marked by many modern pagans as Mabon, a name chosen in the 1970s by the American writer Aidan Kelly and borrowed from a figure in medieval Welsh tales. Our autumn equinox rituals guide covers older equinox customs too, from Higan in Japan to harvest home suppers.
- Canadian Thanksgiving, the second Monday of October, always falls in Libra season. A long table and a round of thank-yous is about as Libra as a holiday gets.
- Harvest festivals fill church halls and village greens in many places, and in some years the Harvest Moon rises in early Libra season.
Libra season ideas for relationships and rooms
- Have the conversation. The one about who does what, said calmly and early, before anyone is keeping score.
- Rebalance a shared job. Swap a chore, split a bill differently, take turns choosing the film.
- Make one room nicer. Move the lamp, clear the table, put something living on it.
- Decide by a date. If a choice keeps sitting on the scales, list the pros and cons and pick a day to settle it.
- Say thank you properly. A note or a call, not just a heart on a message.
- Read the small print. Saturn's exaltation is about fair terms. Check an agreement before you sign it.
The aim isn't perfect harmony. It's a little more fairness than there was in September.
If you were born in Libra season
A Libra birthday is usually best shared: a dinner where the guest list matters more than the venue. For something more reflective, our solar return birthday ritual adds a short look back and a plan for the year ahead. Born on September 22 or 23, or October 22 or 23? Check a chart, because the boundary moves.
Libra is one part of the picture, of course: your Moon and rising sign matter as much as your birthday. For the sign itself, see Libra traits, and for the month, the Libra monthly horoscope.
Questions readers ask
Why is Libra the only sign symbolized by an object?
Because its symbol is the scales. The other eleven are people, animals or a mix of the two, like the centaur archer of Sagittarius. Many writers connect the scales with the equinox, when the Sun reaches Libra and day and night balance.
Is Libra season good for relationships?
Astrologers describe it that way, because Venus rules the sign and Libra is linked with partnership and the seventh house. It's a natural month for honest, fair conversations. It can't fix a relationship by itself, but it's a good time to talk.
Why is the Sun in fall in Libra?
Tradition ties it to the light. The Sun is exalted in Aries, where the northern days start to lengthen, and falls in Libra, where they start to shrink. In a chart, astrologers read a Libra Sun as identity built through relationships rather than alone.
What comes after Libra season?
Scorpio season, from October 23, which moves from the dinner party to the deep conversation. Before Libra comes Virgo season, the tidy end of summer.
