Zodiac element compatibility follows a simple traditional rule. Signs of the same element understand each other most easily, fire gets along well with air, and earth gets along well with water. Fire with earth and air with water are workable with some effort, while fire with water and earth with air are considered the most challenging combinations.
That rule is a useful starting point, but it was never meant to be read off two Sun signs alone. Below is where the rule comes from, a short reading of all ten element pairings, and a worked example of the more revealing method: counting the elements across both people's charts.
The four elements in a sentence each
- Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): energy, enthusiasm, courage, acting first and thinking second.
- Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): practicality, patience, the senses, building things that last.
- Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): ideas, conversation, social connection, seeing things from a distance.
- Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): feeling, intuition, memory, closeness.

Where the compatibility rule comes from
The rule isn't arbitrary. It falls out of two older ideas.
The first is polarity. Fire and air are the active, outgoing elements; earth and water are the receptive, inward ones. Elements on the same side tend to move in the same direction, which is why fire and air feel lively together and earth and water feel settled together.
The second is the classical qualities. In the ancient scheme astrology inherited, each element was a mix of two: fire is hot and dry, air hot and moist, water cold and moist, earth cold and dry. Look at which pairs share something:
- Fire and air share heat, and share a polarity: compatible.
- Earth and water share cold, and share a polarity: compatible.
- Fire and earth share dryness but not polarity: workable.
- Air and water share moisture but not polarity: workable.
- Fire and water share nothing: challenging.
- Earth and air share nothing: challenging.
The folk images follow the same logic. Air feeds a fire, water nourishes earth, water puts out fire, and earth and air simply don't mix.
All ten element pairings
Fire with fire
Warm, fast and fun, with no shortage of enthusiasm. Two fire signs rarely bore each other. Who handles the boring parts is the question.
Earth with earth
Steady, loyal and practical. Two earth signs build a comfortable life together, sometimes so comfortable that romance gets filed under "later."
Air with air
The longest conversation in the zodiac. Lots of freedom, lots of ideas, and a tendency to discuss feelings in the abstract rather than have them.
Water with water
Deep emotional understanding and very little need to explain. The risk is two people absorbing each other's moods, with nobody steady on the bad days.
Fire with air
Air fans the flame. Air brings ideas and perspective, fire brings action. Both like freedom and a busy social life, which suits them well, though neither is naturally drawn to quiet emotional maintenance.
Earth with water
Water nourishes earth. Earth gives water security and a solid home; water gives earth tenderness and emotional depth. Often described as the most naturally domestic combination.
Fire with earth
Fire wants to start, earth wants to finish. There's respect here, and real productivity when fire's drive meets earth's follow-through. The friction is pace: earth feels rushed, fire feels held back.
Air with water
Head meets heart. Air wants to talk a feeling through; water wants to feel it first. Lots of tenderness is possible when air learns to listen without analyzing and water learns to put feelings into words.
Fire with water
Steam or smoke. A strong attraction with mismatched rhythms: fire acts on feelings, water sits with them. Our guide to fire and water signs compatibility goes through all nine pairings.
Earth with air
The planner and the talker. Very different ways of being careful, and a gap where emotional expression should be. Three of these pairs share a ruling planet, which helps more than people expect; see earth and air signs compatibility.
Count the elements across two charts
Sun signs are one placement each. A better picture comes from counting the elements in each person's personal placements: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant. Here's a worked example with two made-up people.
Person A: Sun in Leo (fire), Moon in Aries (fire), Mercury in Virgo (earth), Venus in Cancer (water), Mars in Leo (fire), Ascendant in Sagittarius (fire). That's four fire, one earth, one water, no air.
Person B: Sun in Pisces (water), Moon in Scorpio (water), Mercury in Aquarius (air), Venus in Aries (fire), Mars in Taurus (earth), Ascendant in Libra (air). That's two water, two air, one fire, one earth.
By Sun sign, this is Leo and Pisces, a fire and water pairing that a quick table would call hard. The count tells a more interesting story:
- B's Venus is in fire, so B is attracted to exactly the kind of boldness A has in abundance.
- A has no air at all, and B has two air placements, including the Ascendant. Air feeds fire, and A may find B's perspective and calm genuinely useful. Some astrologers say people are drawn to partners who supply an element they lack.
- The real friction is the Moons. A's Moon in Aries wants to deal with a feeling immediately; B's Moon in Scorpio wants to understand it first. That's where this couple would need to agree on how to argue.
That's more practical than "fire and water don't mix." You can find all six placements in a free birth chart and run the same count for yourself and anyone you're curious about.
Where the element rule breaks down
- It ignores the angle between signs. Fire and air are "compatible," but that group includes opposites like Aries and Libra, which attract strongly and pull in two directions.
- Same element can mean shared blind spots. Two water signs understand each other's feelings and may both avoid hard conversations. Our piece on same zodiac sign relationships looks at the same effect at the level of one sign.
- It describes style, not character. Kindness, honesty and reliability don't belong to an element. Someone who treats you well in a "challenging" pairing is a better bet than someone who doesn't in an easy one.

Questions readers ask
Which elements are compatible in astrology?
Traditionally, each element is most compatible with itself and with its partner of the same polarity: fire with air, and earth with water. Fire and earth, and air and water, are considered workable. Fire and water, and earth and air, are the most challenging.
What element is most compatible with water?
Water is traditionally most comfortable with other water signs and with earth signs. Earth gives water stability and a sense of safety, and water gives earth emotional depth.
Are two fire signs good together?
They usually have great chemistry and plenty of fun, because they share enthusiasm and a love of action. The challenge is that both want to lead and neither loves routine, so someone has to volunteer for the practical side.
What does it mean to be missing an element?
It means none of your main placements fall in that element. Astrologers often read it as a quality you have to learn deliberately, or one you look for in other people. It isn't a flaw, and many charts are missing one.
