Your tarot birth card is a Major Arcana card found from your birth date: add the month, the day and the full year together, then add the digits of that total until you reach a number of 22 or less. That number is your card. Reducing it once more to a single digit gives a second, paired card. The method was popularized by the tarot author Mary K. Greer, who calls the pair your personality card and your soul card.
Like any tarot practice, a birth card is a lens for reflection, not a fixed fate. It gives you one or two cards to get to know well, which turns out to be a lovely way into the Major Arcana.
How to calculate your tarot birth card
- Write your birth date as three numbers: month, day and the full four-digit year.
- Add them together as ordinary numbers. For March 4, 1990, that's 3 + 4 + 1990 = 1997.
- Add the digits of the total: 1 + 9 + 9 + 7 = 26.
- If the result is more than 22, add its digits again: 2 + 6 = 8.
- That number is your personality card. Use the Major Arcana numbering in most modern decks, ours included: The Magician is 1, Strength is 8, Justice is 11, The World is 21, and The Fool counts as 22 in this method.
- Reduce to a single digit for your soul card. If the personality card is already 1 to 9, the two are the same card.
In the example above, the result is 8, so this person's personality and soul card are both Strength.
Three worked birthdays
Here are three made-up birthdays that show the three possible shapes.
One card: November 9, 1986
11 + 9 + 1986 = 2006. Then 2 + 0 + 0 + 6 = 8. A single card, Strength, serving as both personality and soul card. People with one card often like the sense of focus it gives: one image to live with.
A pair: July 28, 1993
7 + 28 + 1993 = 2028. Then 2 + 0 + 2 + 8 = 12, The Hanged Man. Reduce again: 1 + 2 = 3, The Empress. The pair is a deliberate pause (12) and patient, nurturing growth (3), which read nicely together: the willingness to wait is what lets things grow.
A trio: June 9, 1975
6 + 9 + 1975 = 1990. Then 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, The Sun. Reduce: 1 + 9 = 10, Wheel of Fortune. Reduce again: 1 + 0 = 1, The Magician. A reduced total of 19 is the only one that produces three cards: warmth and clarity, cycles and timing, focus and skill.
Every birth card pair, in brief
Because the soul card always comes from reducing the personality card, only certain pairs exist. Each pair shares a root number, and readers often look for the thread that connects the two cards.
- 10 and 1: Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. Turning points, met with skill and initiative.
- 11 and 2: Justice and The High Priestess. Clear, fair thinking alongside quiet inner knowing.
- 12 and 3: The Hanged Man and The Empress. Patience and new perspective feeding growth.
- 13 and 4: Death and The Emperor. Endings and transitions, held within steady structure.
- 14 and 5: Temperance and The Hierophant. Balance and blending, with respect for teaching and tradition.
- 15 and 6: The Devil and The Lovers. Attachment and choice: knowing what holds you and what you truly value.
- 16 and 7: The Tower and The Chariot. Sudden clarity and the determination to move forward from it.
- 17 and 8: The Star and Strength. Quiet hope and quiet courage.
- 18 and 9: The Moon and The Hermit. Imagination and uncertainty, worked through in reflection.
- 19, 10 and 1: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. Warmth, timing and skill.
- 20 and 2: Judgement and The High Priestess. A calling, heard through intuition.
- 21 and 3: The World and The Empress. Completion and abundance, the satisfaction of things coming to fruition.
- 22 and 4: The Fool and The Emperor. Fresh beginnings and the structure that makes them last.
And if your total reduces straight to a number from 1 to 9, your single card is the matching Major Arcana card, from The Magician (1) to The Hermit (9).
Birth card, zodiac card and life path number
Three different systems tie a card or number to your birth, and they're easy to mix up.
Your birth card comes from the sum of your full date, as above.
Your zodiac card comes from your Sun sign. In the system most modern decks follow, each sign has a Major Arcana card: Aries is The Emperor, Pisces is The Moon, and so on. Our guide to the tarot cards for each zodiac sign lists all twelve.
Your life path number is a numerology figure. On this site, it reduces the month, day and year separately before adding them, and keeps 11, 22 and 33 as master numbers, so it can land on a different number from your birth card. Our life path number calculator does the arithmetic for you, and our guide to numerology and tarot explores how numbers and cards connect.
None of the three overrides the others. Many readers enjoy seeing where they agree.
Your year card
The same method gives a card for each year of your life. Use your birth month and day with the year of your most recent birthday, rather than your birth year. For a June 9 birthday, the year that began on June 9, 2020 works out as 6 + 9 + 2020 = 2035, then 2 + 0 + 3 + 5 = 10: a Wheel of Fortune year.
Readers use a year card as a theme to keep in mind from one birthday to the next. It's a pleasant thing to work out on your birthday morning and write at the front of a new notebook.
How to use a birth card without treating it as fate
A birth card isn't a verdict on who you are. It's two images to think with. Some ways to use them:
- Read both card pages slowly. Notice which parts feel true and which don't. Both are useful.
- Look for your cards in readings. When your birth card turns up in a spread, some readers give it extra attention, as if the reading is talking about something central to you.
- Use the soul card as a question. If yours is The Hermit, ask yourself every so often: when did I last take time alone to think?
- Don't use it to judge other people. "She's a Tower person" is a quick way to stop seeing the actual human in front of you.
Questions readers ask
What if my total comes to 22?
In this method, 22 is The Fool. Reduce it again, 2 + 2 = 4, and your soul card is The Emperor. It's a nice pairing: the leap into something new and the structure that helps it last.
Is my tarot birth card the same as my zodiac card?
No. Your birth card comes from adding up your birth date; your zodiac card comes from your Sun sign. They're two separate systems and usually give different cards. Many readers like knowing both.
Why do websites give me different birth cards?
Some methods add the digits differently, for instance reducing the month, day and year separately before combining them, or counting The Fool as 0. Small differences in method can change the result. The steps above follow the most widely used approach, with The Fool as 22.
Can a Minor Arcana card be a birth card?
Not in this method, which only uses the 22 Major Arcana. Some readers extend the idea by linking their Sun sign's ten-degree slice to a numbered Minor card, but that's a different system based on astrology rather than arithmetic.
