Black Moon Lilith in astrology isn't a planet, a moon or any physical object. It's a calculated point: the apogee of the Moon's orbit, where the Moon is farthest from Earth, projected onto the zodiac. Astrologers read it as the part of you that won't be tamed: desires, anger and independence you may have learned to hide, and the places where you've felt judged simply for wanting what you want.

It's a modern addition to astrology, and a popular one. Here's what the point really is, the difference between mean and true Lilith, where the name comes from, and what Lilith is associated with in each sign and house.

What the point actually is

The Moon's orbit isn't a circle but an ellipse, so its distance from Earth changes through the month. The nearest point of the orbit is the perigee and the farthest is the apogee. Black Moon Lilith marks the direction of the apogee, translated into a degree of the zodiac.

The ellipse itself slowly turns, so the apogee creeps forward through the signs, taking about 8.85 years to go all the way round. That works out at roughly nine months in each sign, which is why people born in the same school year often share a Lilith sign.

So when a chart says "Lilith 14 degrees Leo," it means the far end of the Moon's orbit pointed toward 14 degrees of Leo when you were born. Nothing was sitting there. It's a direction, like the north end of a compass needle.

Mean Lilith or true Lilith?

Chart software usually offers two versions, and they can disagree.

  • Mean Lilith is the averaged position of the apogee. It moves smoothly forward and is the default on most calculators that show Lilith.
  • True Lilith, sometimes called osculating Lilith, follows the actual apogee from moment to moment as the Sun's pull stretches and twists the Moon's orbit. It wobbles, sometimes moves backward, and can sit many degrees from the mean point, occasionally in the neighboring sign.

Neither is wrong; they answer slightly different questions. Most astrologers who write about Lilith use the mean point. If your two versions fall in different signs, read both and see which description fits.

Two other things share the name. Asteroid 1181 Lilith, discovered in 1927 and named after the French composer Lili Boulanger, is a real object in the asteroid belt with nothing to do with the Moon. And the original "Black Moon" of early twentieth-century astrology was a supposed second, dark moon of Earth that was never found. When astrologers say Black Moon Lilith today, they almost always mean the mean lunar apogee.

Where the name Lilith comes from

The name comes from Jewish folklore. A night creature called lilith appears once in the Hebrew Bible, in Isaiah 34:14, and older Mesopotamian traditions told of female night spirits with a similar name. The best-known story is from a medieval text, the Alphabet of Ben Sira, in which Lilith is Adam's first wife, made from the earth just as he was. She refuses to be subordinate to him, speaks the divine name and flies away rather than submit.

Astrologers borrowed that figure in the twentieth century. In chart readings, Lilith became a symbol of what refuses to be ruled: sexuality on your own terms, anger that won't be politely swallowed, independence that others call too much. Some astrologers read her as a wound, the place you were shamed or pushed out. Others read her as a power, the place you won't compromise. Most hold both at once.

Black Moon Lilith through the signs

How astrologers commonly describe each sign placement:

  • Aries: anger and self-assertion, especially if you were raised to be agreeable; a refusal to wait for permission.
  • Taurus: pleasure, the body and money; feeling judged for wanting comfort, and learning to want it anyway.
  • Gemini: your voice; being told you talk too much or think the wrong things, and saying them regardless.
  • Cancer: mothering and need; mixed feelings about caring for others, or about being cared for.
  • Leo: visibility; being told to tone it down, and the wish to be admired without apologizing.
  • Virgo: perfection and the body; harsh standards, and a quiet rebellion against them.
  • Libra: relationships and fairness; refusing to keep the peace at your own expense.
  • Scorpio: sex, power and secrets; an intensity others find unsettling, and a hard-won honesty about it.
  • Sagittarius: belief and freedom; rejecting the rules you were raised with and writing your own.
  • Capricorn: authority and ambition; distrust of whoever's in charge, and a wish to be in charge yourself.
  • Aquarius: belonging; feeling like the outsider in every group, and turning it into a strength.
  • Pisces: imagination and escape; a sensitivity that was dismissed, and a spiritual life on your own terms.

For the signs themselves, see our zodiac signs pages. Because Lilith stays in a sign for months, the house, which depends on your birth time, is the more personal of the two.

Lilith in the houses, briefly

  • First: an untamed presence; people notice you before you speak.
  • Second: complicated feelings about money and self-worth.
  • Third: a sharp tongue, or a voice you had to fight for.
  • Fourth: home and family as the place of the first wound, or the first rebellion.
  • Fifth: creativity, play and romance without asking permission.
  • Sixth: clashes with routines, workplaces or the body's limits.
  • Seventh: partners who challenge you, or a refusal to shrink inside a relationship.
  • Eighth: intensity around intimacy, trust and control. Our guide to the eighth house in astrology explains why this placement draws so much attention.
  • Ninth: a heretic's streak about religion, politics or school.
  • Tenth: a public reputation as difficult, bold, or both.
  • Eleventh: groups and friendships where you never quite fit.
  • Twelfth: desires kept private, sometimes even from yourself.

Working with your Lilith placement

Lilith readings tend to land when they're used as questions rather than labels. Three to try:

  1. Where in my life do I feel I'm "too much"? Who first told me so?
  2. What do I want that I'm embarrassed to want?
  3. When did saying no cost me something, and was it worth the cost?

These pair well with shadow work prompts if you keep a journal. If what comes up is heavy, such as old abuse or shame that won't settle, that's work for a good therapist, not a chart. Lilith also sits naturally beside Chiron in astrology, the other modern point people use to think about old hurts. Chiron is more about the wound and what it teaches; Lilith is more about suppression and refusal.

Questions readers ask

How do I find my Black Moon Lilith?

Use a chart calculator that lists Lilith, usually among the extra points, and note whether it shows mean or true. Our free birth chart doesn't include Lilith, but it does draw your twelve houses on the wheel, so once you know Lilith's degree you can see which house it falls in. The sign needs only your birth date; the house needs a birth time.

Is Black Moon Lilith bad?

No. It's associated with what was rejected or hidden, which can be uncomfortable to look at, but astrologers increasingly read it as a source of strength: the part of you that refuses to be smaller than you are.

What is a Lilith return?

Mean Lilith circles the zodiac in about 8.85 years, so it comes back to its birth position around ages 9, 18, 27, 35 and 44. Some astrologers treat these as times when old questions about freedom and desire come back up.

Does Lilith matter in compatibility?

Some astrologers look at contacts between one person's Lilith and the other's Venus, Mars or Moon in synastry, often reading them as strong attraction with a power struggle inside it. They're a detail, not the headline.
