In astrology, opposite zodiac signs are often strongly attracted to each other. They sit directly across the wheel, so each tends to have what the other lacks, and yet they share more than the word "opposite" suggests: the same modality, the same polarity and a common theme seen from two ends. That mix of familiarity and contrast is what makes the pull so strong.

Whether the attraction lasts is a different question. Opposites can balance each other beautifully or pull in two directions until something gives. Here is how the six pairs of opposite signs work, and what tends to make the difference.

What makes two signs opposites

The zodiac has twelve signs arranged in a circle. Opposite signs sit six signs apart, 180 degrees across the wheel, and astrologers call the angle between them an opposition. There are six such pairs, often called axes or polarities.

Opposite signs always share three things:

  • Modality. Both are cardinal (initiating), both fixed (sustaining) or both mutable (adapting). They move at the same tempo, which is one reason they recognize each other.
  • Polarity. Every sign is either active (yang, sometimes called masculine or positive: fire and air) or receptive (yin, sometimes called feminine or negative: earth and water). Opposites are always on the same side. Fire sits across from air, earth across from water.
  • A theme. Each axis is a single question approached from two ends, such as self and other, or home and career.

So opposite signs aren't strangers. They're more like two people standing at either end of the same bridge.

The six axes

Aries and Libra: self and partner

Aries, cardinal fire ruled by Mars, is the sign of the self: initiative, independence, acting on your own behalf. Libra, cardinal air ruled by Venus, is the sign of partnership: fairness, diplomacy, considering the other person. Aries teaches Libra to want something for itself; Libra teaches Aries that other people have a view. See Aries and Libra compatibility.

Taurus and Scorpio: mine and ours

Taurus, fixed earth ruled by Venus, is linked with personal resources, comfort and what you own. Scorpio, fixed water ruled by Pluto and traditionally Mars, is linked with shared resources, intimacy and what lies beneath the surface. The attraction is famously intense, and so is the stubbornness. See Taurus and Scorpio compatibility.

Gemini and Sagittarius: the question and the answer

Gemini, mutable air ruled by Mercury, is about local knowledge, conversation, gathering facts. Sagittarius, mutable fire ruled by Jupiter, is about the big picture, travel, belief and meaning. Gemini asks how; Sagittarius asks why. Both love ideas and freedom, which makes for lively company. See Gemini and Sagittarius compatibility.

Cancer and Capricorn: home and the world

Cancer, cardinal water ruled by the Moon, looks after private life, family and feeling. Capricorn, cardinal earth ruled by Saturn, looks after public life, career and structure. Both are protective; they just protect different things. This is often called the most marriage-minded axis. See Cancer and Capricorn compatibility.

Leo and Aquarius: the individual and the group

Leo, fixed fire ruled by the Sun, celebrates personal expression and the warmth of one heart. Aquarius, fixed air ruled by Uranus and traditionally Saturn, is concerned with community, ideas and the good of the group. Leo wants to be special; Aquarius wants everyone to be equal. Each can widen the other's view. See Leo and Aquarius compatibility.

Virgo and Pisces: order and surrender

Virgo, mutable earth ruled by Mercury, is about service, detail and making things work. Pisces, mutable water ruled by Neptune and traditionally Jupiter, is about compassion, imagination and letting go. Both are helpers: Virgo through fixing, Pisces through understanding. See Virgo and Pisces compatibility.

Why the pull is so strong

Astrologers often describe an opposite sign as a mirror. You see in them a quality you have in you but rarely use, and it can feel exciting, even fated. In a birth chart, the sign opposite your rising sign sits on the cusp of the seventh house, which astrologers associate with committed partnership and with the kind of person you tend to be drawn to. Our guide to the seventh house explains why that matters.

There's also a practical reason. Because opposites share a tempo, the relationship moves at a pace that suits both. Two cardinal signs both like to start things; two fixed signs both like to commit; two mutable signs both like to adapt. They don't have to slow down or speed up for each other, the way signs with different modalities sometimes do.

Where opposite-sign couples get stuck

The same contrast that attracts can also divide. The common pattern is the seesaw: each person moves further toward their own end of the axis, until one does all the feeling and the other all the planning, or one does all the giving and the other all the deciding. The relationship becomes a pair of roles rather than two whole people.

The other risk is projection. If you're drawn to someone because they have a quality you've neglected in yourself, it's easy to rely on them for it rather than developing it. An Aries who lets Libra do all the diplomacy, or a Pisces who lets Virgo handle every practical thing, can end up resentful of the very trait that first attracted them.

Opposites tend to last when each person borrows a little from the other end of the axis. That's the real gift of an opposite-sign relationship: not completion, but balance.

Opposites beyond the Sun sign

Sun signs are only one layer. Two people can have opposite Sun signs but very compatible Moons, or similar Suns with Venus in opposite signs. Astrologers who compare two charts, a practice called synastry, look at oppositions between all the planets, not only the Sun. Our explainer on what synastry is covers the basics, and you can see your own planets in a free birth chart. For two charts side by side, the Love Compatibility Report does the comparison in detail.

Questions readers ask

Do opposite signs make good couples?

They can. Opposite signs share a modality and polarity, so they move at a similar pace, and they bring complementary strengths. The relationship tends to work best when each person learns from the other rather than leaving them to carry one side alone.

Which opposite signs are most compatible?

Each axis has strengths. Cancer and Capricorn are often seen as the most marriage-minded, and Taurus and Scorpio as the most magnetic. In practice, the full birth charts and the two people's habits matter far more than the axis itself.

Why are opposite signs attracted to each other?

Astrologers describe opposite signs as mirrors: each embodies qualities the other has but rarely expresses. Because they share a modality and polarity, they also feel familiar. That combination of contrast and recognition creates a strong pull.

Are opposite signs soulmates?

Not by definition. An opposite sign can feel fated because of the mirror effect, but astrology doesn't assign soulmates by sign. Lasting compatibility depends on communication, shared values and respect.
