The Moon

  • uncertainty
  • imagination
  • dreams
  • intuition
  • unease

Half-light and uncertainty; a time when imagination runs strong and things aren't yet fully clear.

Upright

The Moon is the card of uncertainty and imagination. Traditionally it points to illusion, dreams, the unconscious and the feeling of moving through unfamiliar terrain without full visibility. It is attributed to Pisces, a sign associated with sensitivity and the imaginative world. Where The Star is clear, The Moon is shadowy, and things may not be what they seem.

In practical terms, this card can appear when you're unsure what's real in a situation: a vague worry that grows at night, a message you can't quite read, a decision clouded by too many possibilities. The Moon doesn't ask you to solve everything at once. It asks you to tell the difference between what you know and what you fear. Write down the facts. Sleep on big decisions. Pay attention to dreams and creative ideas, but check them against daylight before acting.

Reversed

Our draws are upright-only by default; some readers use reversals as a quieter, inward or blocked version of the card.

Reversed, The Moon suggests that confusion is starting to lift, or that anxieties are being kept under the surface rather than examined. You may feel things becoming clearer, or you may be dismissing feelings that deserve gentle attention. Bring worries into the open by writing them down or talking them through. Most of them shrink in plain light.

Symbolism

Traditional imagery shows a full moon with a face, sometimes overlapping a crescent, shining down on a path that winds between two towers toward distant hills. A dog and a wolf howl at it, and a crayfish crawls out of a pool in the foreground. Drops fall from the moon toward the earth. Themes include the unconscious, illusion, instinct, fear of the unknown and the creative power of the imagination.
