Patient balance; blending different parts of your life into something steady and sustainable.

Upright

Temperance is the card of the middle way. Traditionally it signals moderation, patience and the art of blending opposites into something workable. The figure on the card pours liquid between two cups, neither spilling nor rushing, and that careful flow is the heart of its meaning. It is attributed to Sagittarius, which lends it a sense of long-range purpose.

In everyday life, Temperance often appears when you're balancing competing demands: work and rest, saving and spending, your needs and someone else's. Its advice is rarely dramatic. Adjust a little at a time. Mix the hard week with a gentle evening. Find a pace you could keep for months rather than days. The card can also describe slowly bringing together parts of your life that have felt separate, so they start to support each other instead of competing.

Reversed

Our draws are upright-only by default; some readers use reversals as a quieter, inward or blocked version of the card.

Reversed, Temperance points to excess or impatience. Things may be swinging between extremes: all work, then none; strict rules, then no rules at all. Or you may be trying to rush a process that only works slowly. Look for the place where you've lost the middle ground, and make one modest correction rather than another dramatic swing.

Symbolism

Traditional imagery shows a winged angel standing with one foot on land and one in water, pouring liquid between two cups. A triangle within a square is sometimes marked on the robe, and a path leads from a pool toward a crown of light over distant mountains. Irises grow nearby. Themes include moderation, alchemy, the reconciliation of opposites and a patient, almost artistic, approach to balance.
