Six of Pentacles

  • generosity
  • giving and receiving
  • fairness
  • support

Giving and receiving in balance; the flow of help, resources and kindness between people.

Upright

The Six of Pentacles is a card of generosity and exchange. Sixes bring harmony after the disruption of the five, and in the practical suit that harmony comes through sharing resources. Traditionally it shows a merchant weighing coins on a scale and giving them to two kneeling figures. It signals charity, fairness, support and the flow of help in both directions.

In everyday life, this card might describe lending a hand to a friend, receiving support after a hard time, splitting costs fairly, or mentoring someone newer than you. It encourages you to think about balance. When you give, give in a way that respects the other person. When you receive, accept graciously. The scales in the image are a reminder that generosity works best when it's thoughtful, not lopsided. Notice which side of the exchange you're on right now, and whether the balance feels right.

Reversed

Our draws are upright-only by default; some readers use reversals as a quieter, inward or blocked version of the card.

Reversed, the Six of Pentacles suggests imbalance in giving and receiving. You may be giving more than you can sustain, accepting help with strings attached, or struggling to receive at all. Look at the exchange honestly. Set limits where generosity has become depletion, and let others help you where pride has been getting in the way.

Symbolism

The Six of Pentacles traditionally shows a well-dressed merchant holding a set of balanced scales in one hand while dropping coins into the outstretched hand of a kneeling figure. A second figure kneels beside, waiting, and six pentacles float above. The scales suggest fairness in distribution. Themes include charity, gifts, the power that comes with giving and the dignity of receiving.
